Installing hardwood floors

Installing hardwood floors

Installing a hardwood floor would be a great way to add value to your home. Even better, you can do it by yourself and get the satisfaction you want while saving your money.

Steps for installing hardwood flooring

Plan your floor

Consider the subfloor material that you have as well as its width which may affect the direction in which the hardwoods will be laid in the room i.e. either parallel or perpendicular.

Hardwood installations have more stability when installed perpendicular to joist though a parallel installation would be possible if there is enough subfloor.

Prepare the subfloor

Make sure that your subfloor is well leveled for installation of hardwood. Falls and rises should not be more than 3/16 over a span of 6 foot. If you experience systemic problems, you can opt to complete replacement by using asphalt shingles to level the OSB or plywood subfloor. In order to make the floor uniform, this methods depends on shingles as well as an extra layer of plywood.

In case the subfloor is high in one or several locations, you can level the floor by pulling up the subfloor and then plane the crowing joist .You can use this approach if the subfloor is low in a single location. Once done, reattach the subfloor by use of construction adhesive and screws.

It is imperative to seek the advice of a structural engineer if you decide to plane a joist as it can affect the structural integrity of your floor.

Acclimate the hard wood

Once you have sufficiently leveled your subfloor, acclimate the woods in the location they will be installed and leave them for between 7 and 10 days. Don’t stack the boxes and remember to heat normally or run the A/C.

Spring and Fall are the best seasons for installing hardwood floors since temperatures and humidity are at an annual average .However, installation can also be done in summer and winter when the proper precautions are taken. Make sure you don’t store the hardwoods in areas where they can become damp.

Lay the first row

Lay the first few hardwood boards once the hardwoods are acclimated properly. Make sure you are careful when doing this since the first boards have an effect on the remainder of the installation.

If the first row is properly installed, the remainder of the floor will lay itself .Gaps will develop as you lay the other boards if the first ones are not installed properly.

Lay hardwoods throughout the floor

Continue laying the hardwoods in the field. Installing hardwood floors is not a complicated procedure though it is tedious. However, there are some parts that can be challenging such those around vents, walls, fireplace and doors. You may need to lay the hardwoods differently in such areas.

Lay the last board

You will need to practice blind nailing and face nailing of the hardwood when you come to the last boards of the installation. This is because a hardwood flooring nailer or stapler may not fit at this stage.

Choosing The Perfect Home Furniture

Taking time to identify the kind of furniture you need for your home is very important. It will not only leave your home beautiful, comfortable and stylish but it will ensure that you do not have to keep on buying furniture every now and then. Everyone has unique tastes and styles, therefore, stay as original as you can. Your home should speak volumes about what kind of a person you are, your tastes and preferences.

Here are some factors you should consider when choosing furniture for your home.

Home Furniture

The Size of Your Home

The bigger your house is, the more furniture you need. You are not limited on the size of furniture because you have a big space that can fit many things. If you have a small house, consider getting furniture that saves on space. For instance, you can get folding chairs that can be tacked away or hang on walls when not in use. You can also get round tables instead of rectangular shaped ones because they use less space. Having fewer pieces of furniture will also make your house look bigger and spacious.

Your Homes Occupants

Do you have small children? Do you have people with special needs especially physical disabilities? If you have small children, you might prefer to get furniture that is easy to clean and maintain. It should also be strong and durable. For rooms frequented by children, glass furniture may not be ideal. People with special needs may also need special furniture. This will make them more comfortable around the house.

Your Budget

This is a very important factor. How much are you willing to spend on your home’s furniture? Elegant, unique and stylish masterpieces will definitely cost you more. For example, furniture made from oak will be more expensive than that made from plastic. The more you are able to put aside as a budget for your home furniture, the more you can spend on the things you like. Even on a low budget, you can still get quality, beautiful and stylish pieces for your home. All you need is to take a bit of time on the task. Your taste may also determine the type of furniture to choose for your home.

Quality of the Furniture

It can be very disappointing if you buy something then after some time it breaks down or starts rotting. Always check the quality of the furniture you decide to buy. If possible, buy from trusted and reliable dealers. It is also good to get a warranty on the product. This saves you a lot of money in case it is faulty or needs some work done on it.

You need to take time to analyze you needs and what value it is supposed to add in your life. By doing this, you will limit the chances of buying things you do not need or having to return things because they are too big or small for your house. Always get furniture from a reliable supplier who can even help you fit them in your home.

How To Treat Termites In Your Home

Once that you come to know that your place is infested with termites, there are certain things that you need to do. First of all, there is no need to panic. Rather, get your place inspected by some pest management professional. Next, do not rush in getting any termite treatment in order to deal with this problem. Take your time in order to evaluate various treatments before you determine your course of action.

The kind of termite treatment that you opt for will depend on how extensive the problem is and how much it will cost. You will need to get a  termite inspection before you do anything else. Also, check out for the damage that would have to be repaired by a contractor before any kind of termite treatment is done.

A typical termite treatment would include spraying the surface of infested wood. This would help to kill those termites that you can see. But this will not help to stop either the infestation or any further termite attacks. Typically, the most common termite treatment would be one in which a liquid insecticide will be applied to the soil that surrounds the critical areas of your place, including the foundation wall. Next, there will be drilling as well as treating of the concrete slabs which attach to the house. Any kind of masonry voids will also have to be treated.

Another option is the use of spot treatments where only that area of the house is treated where the termites are found. Also, a spot treatment will cost much lesser than a full termite treatment plan.
Next is using a termite bait. This is quite different from a liquid termite treatment but it can be used along with a liquid treatment. With so many options available, you need to select one that is able to meet all your requirements and fits inside your budget too.

How to Make the Most of Your Christmas Decoration Ideas

If you are thinking of exploring new Christmas decorations, then it is very important to know what works and what doesn’t work. Sadly, many people get carried away by the pomp and glamor and the excitement of trying something new until they lose focus on what they want to achieve.

Since there is so much diversity and plenty of ideas to explore, you should have no problem creating a perfect interior on Christmas. However, it can be quite tough to create a perfect interior if you are not sure about your options for decoration. It certainly helps to have a clear picture of the outcome before you start working on your plans.

How Much Christmas Decorations Should I Use?

Naturally, many people are predisposed to using most if not all Christmas decorations that they have. This is a common mistake that often produces unattractive results. As much as you are tempted to try everything during Christmas, using several contrasting elements can create a very poor picture of your space. So, don’t overdo the decorations; the less the better.

A better way of selecting and using decorations is seeking the opinion of your family members. Don’t be highly opinionated or subjective about your decorations, unless, you are living alone or not expecting guests. A second or third person will give you a better assessment of the appearance of your room or space and help you fine tune your decorations.

Besides the opinion of a third party, you should consider the size of your room. If you have a smaller room, then go for a small number of decorations. Conversely, use a moderate number of decoration elements on a bigger space. It’s all about creating a balance between beauty and function. So, don’t sacrifice one for the other.

Using Elements of Decoration

It is really important to focus on elements that will accentuate your overall theme of decoration. You’ve got to choose your decorations wisely to avoid overcrowding or disharmony. Of course, some of the common Christmas decorations need no introduction, but there are some really interesting and tricky sub-styles that you’ve got to think carefully about. It won’t cost you an arm to dig deeper for information on different Christmas themes and elements and come up with something special this festive season.

Decoration and the Price Factor

Many people find themselves spending a whole lot more than they would have wanted during the festive season. Well, you don’t have to spend a fortune to create the perfect Christmas decorations. You can still achieve wonderful results on a lean decoration budget. As we have seen, there are so many good ideas that you can try out on a tight budget.

If you are thinking of getting more value for your money then you should consider ordering or buying decorations from discount stores. Another way of lowering the costs is buying decorations a month or two before Christmas when the prices are quite affordable. Start planning early, draft your budget, and think carefully about what and how you want to do your decorations. This way, you can never go wrong on the outcome of your decorations.
